What is a skincare routine?

To maintain and take care of one’s skin, one must follow a skincare routine. There are usually three steps involved in the process: cleansing – washing your face, toning – balancing the skin on your face, and moisturizing – hydrating and softening it.

Therefore, a basic skincare routine requires several steps using multiple skincare products for different areas and concerns on the face. To maximize the benefits of each skincare product, you need to understand and learn the right order in which to use The Ordinary products.

The basic skincare steps are as follows:

  1. Removing makeup if wearing any
  2. Cleansing your face
  3. Applying a spot treatment for blemishes (again if you have any blemishes)
  4. Applying moisturizer
  5. Using SPF, etc.

Note: To prevent any uncertainty, one should always check the ingredients of skincare and beauty products.

Creating Your Skin Care Routine with The Ordinary

From skincare novices to beauty veterans, everyone can benefit from learning how to get the most out of The Ordinary’s range of products. This tailored guide will provide you with all the knowledge you need to create an effective routine for glowing and healthy skin.

Step #1: Understand Your Skin Type and Needs.

Knowing your skin type and needs is a crucial part of building your skincare routine. Consider factors such as oiliness, sensitivity, texture, and dehydration to decide which products will work best for you. The Ordinary has options suitable for all skin types, so you can be sure you’re getting something that will cater to your individual needs.

Step #2: Choose the Right Products for You & Your Skin Type.

The key to building a perfect skincare routine with The Ordinary is to make sure you choose the products that are specially designed for your skin type. With such an extensive range of products, there’s bound to be something for everyone!

To decide which products are best for you, start by considering conditions such as sebum production and the oiliness of the skin. Then assess issues like sensitivity, dehydration and texture — once you’ve determined your specific needs, use this information to find the perfect combination of The Ordinary products to meet them.

Step #3: Start with a Simple Routine & Add Products Gradually.

It’s always best to start with a simple, basic routine and then add to it over time. You don’t want to overwhelm your skin all at once! Start by double cleansing your face each night with an oil-based cleanser followed by a gentle foaming or gel cleanser.

Add in an exfoliating product like an alpha hydroxy acid 1-3 times per week. Lastly, finish up your evening routine with a hydrating moisturizer and sunscreen daily. From there, you can gradually build up until you get the perfect routine for you.

Step #4: Experiment with Different Formulas to Tune Your Routine.

After establishing a basic routine, the next step is to experiment with different formulas and ingredients to further customize your skin care. Think about what concerns you have, such as wrinkles, discoloration, acne, etc and then search for products that can specifically target those issues.

For example, if you’re looking to reduce fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, try The Ordinary’s Argireline Solution 10% or Matrixyl 10% + HA!

Step #5: Get Regular Facials, Treatments, and Skincare Check-Ups.

To get the most out of your skincare routine, it’s important to treat your skin with regular treatments. Facials and other treatments done in salons and spas can be great for deep-rooted problems that you may not be able to address with your products alone.

It’s also a good idea to get a skincare checkup every six months or so with a licensed professional. They will advise you on the proper use of The Ordinary products, as well as suggest other procedures like chemical peels or microdermabrasion depending on your goals.

A Guide to Using and Understanding the Ordinary Ingredients

The Ordinary has become a household name for skincare in recent years, providing an array of high-quality ingredients that can work wonders on even the most sensitive skin.

In this guide, we explore what each ingredient does and which combinations are best for your skin type so you can get the most out of your skincare routine with The Ordinary!

Vitamin A: Retinoids and Retinol Derivatives for Anti-Aging Benefits

Vitamin A, or retinoids and retinol derivatives, works to slow down the signs of aging like wrinkles, fine lines and age spots by stimulating collagen production and increasing cell turnover.

Regular use of vitamin A can result in smoother, firmer skin tone as well as a more even skin texture. The Ordinary offers both Retinol 0.2% in Squalane and Retinol 0.5% in Squalane which are ideal for wrinkle-prone areas such as the forehead and chin.

Hyaluronic Acid & B5: Hydrating Power Couple

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 is a great product to add to your skincare regime if you’re looking for something that targets dryness. Hyaluronic acid retains moisture, while B5 helps the skin to absorb and retain it more effectively.

This product is ideal for those who want hydrated and plump skin, as well as reducing signs of redness or irritation.

Niacinamide: The Multi-Tasking Ingredient

Niacinamide, or vitamin B3, is well known for its ability to reduce inflammation, improve moisturization and protect the skin from environmental triggers. Niacinamide also refreshes the complexion and evens out skin tone by reducing sebum production and smoothing out the skin’s surface.

The Ordinary offers a variety of products containing this multi-tasking ingredient in both high-concentration strengths (10%) and lower concentrations (5%).

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): Exfoliation at its Finest

Alpha hydroxy acids, or AHAs, gently exfoliate the skin by dissolving the bonds between dead skin cells. The Ordinary offers several products containing AHAs that are suitable for various skin types and sensitivities. AHAs can help reduce signs of aging, revealing smoother, brighter-looking skin.

Keep in mind that they may cause sun sensitivity so using daily sunscreen and avoiding long-term sunlight exposure is highly recommended when using this ingredient.

Peptides & Matrixyl Synthe’6™: Plumping Benefits

Peptides are short chains of amino acids which send signals to your skin that it needs to produce more collagen. Matrixyl Synthe’6™ is one such peptide and has been shown to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, improve skin texture and even out skin tone.

The Ordinary offers products containing this peptide that can be used both morning and evening for the best results. Using products containing Matrixyl together with AHAs can help plump up the skin while minimizing signs of aging.

An Overview of The Ordinary Skincare Routine

Considering the popularity of K-pop culture and the skincare industry at the moment, it’s no surprise that every popular skin and routine is inspired by South Korean culture and skincare.

We all love to explore the potential and benefits of Korean skincare routines and idol skincare routines. The reason for its popularity has changed, and it is now more popular due to its effectiveness. A multi-step skincare routine like k-beauty has been recommended by well-known beauty experts.

Because of this, you can customize your skincare routine

for AM and PM accordingly to reap the full benefits of The Ordinary Skincare Formula.

So, are you ready to discover the benefits and richness of The Ordinary Skincare products? For maximum benefits, follow the steps below while using The Ordinary products.

The Ordinary: An AM Skincare Routine for Everyone

Following are some easy-to-follow steps anyone can take during their morning skincare routine if they are uncertain which products to use for what:

Step #1: Cleanse

The very first step one needs to take is to help your skin wake up in the morning. So, start your day off by cleaning your face first. This step removes all the impurities, bacteria, sebum, and sweat that your skin may have accumulated throughout the night.

Cleansing your skin first thing in the morning will also get rid of any unwanted and old residue that has been left on your skin from the night before.

Clean prepares your skin for the remaining skincare products that will bring the required nutrients and benefits to your skin.

For cleaning your skin, you can use a gentle foam cleanser. If you have dry skin, please make sure to find a gentle cleanser that won’t strip away much-needed moisture from your skin.

If you have oily skin, we recommend you opt for double cleansing or use a product that can help you regulate the extra sebum on your face’s skin.

Step #2: Exfoliate

Exfoliating is a must if you want to achieve healthy and glowing skin. While this step isn’t necessary for everyday use, a good skincare routine usually requires exfoliation to be done about twice or thrice a week.

This step removes the topmost layer of one’s skin, particularly the dead skin cells that can harm the skin if not removed daily. (For instance, it’s like applying hand cream while wearing gloves)

Exfoliating is usually necessary to promote healthy cell turnover. Additionally, by getting rid of this layer, you also remove the stubborn and nasty impurities that your cleansers might have left in your skin.

Many people argue that one should exfoliate before going to bed, especially if one wears makeup during the day. However, experts recommend exfoliating in the morning as it is more beneficial to the skin.

Since the skin heals and repairs itself when you sleep, it produces a layer of dead skin cells waiting for you to remove it when you wake up.

Generally, professionals recommend choosing between a physical and chemical exfoliator depending on your skin condition and type at the moment.

However, since we are talking about The Ordinary Skincare Routine, you’ll likely be more inclined to use their popular chemical exfoliators.

Step #3: Tone

Toning the skin is a pen essential and a very effective step in taking care of your skin. As we go about our daily tasks, the pH levels of our skin change. And toners are formulated to balance the pH levels of our skin.

Many popular toners from well-known brands have hydrating properties; many are also gentle on one’s skin. Some toners even have added hydrating properties that nourish our skin.

Some are made for multifunction, as some toners can also exfoliate your skin.

Step #4: Nourish

Here’s my favorite part of the skincare routine, i.e. Nourishment.

Today, the world of skincare is changing very rapidly and it is getting bigger and bigger every day. There are a wide variety of outstanding products available to choose from.

There are however three most popular types of nourishing products and all of which have been categorized thanks to the k-beauty’s popularity and rise.

The three categories are as follows:

  1. Essence
  2. Ampoules
  3. Serums

These products are formulated to have a high concentration of certain skincare ingredients to help with very specific and targeted skincare concerns. The difference between these three is the level of potency, concentration and texture.

And this particular level/step, the brand The Ordinary thrives. It’s a well-designed brand for a wide range of nourishing serums that target various skin types and conditions.

So for the best The Ordinary skincare routine, get to know your skin first, then study each serum and what they do and offer, and then accordingly choose the best treatment as per your skin’s requirement and condition.

Step #5: Moisturize

This one is another crucial step in any type of skincare routine i.e. Moisturizing.

For our skin to be healthy and glowing, it needs the right type and amount of moisture. However, due to various factors, such as one’s skin type and over-stripping cleansers, sometimes the skin lacks its crucial substance and this is where moisturizers come in.

Apart from the obvious fact that a moisturizer provides our skin with the required moisture and hydration, it has another vital role to play. When we use moisturizers, it locks in the products that we’ve previously used.

Hence, moisturizer is crucial to reap all the benefits of the multiple products used in the routine.

Note: during the day, it’s recommended to use lightweight moisturizers. Even better, if you can find ones that can be used as primers.

You can try out the brand’s popular Natural Moisturizing Factors Cream for your The Ordinary skincare regimen.

Step #6: UV Protection

There are several steps in a skincare routine that one can do during the daytime and nighttime. However, there’s this one crucial step that can only be performed during the daytime. It’s a step one must never skip in the morning (in every season): Putting on some sunscreen.

I’m sure you have heard, prevention is better than finding a cure for most things in life, and the same goes for skincare. Sunscreen helps protect your skin and prevent it from suffering any damage from sun exposure.

Luckily, you have a terrific option to choose from for UV protection from The Ordinary brand. So make sure to add one of them to your daytime skincare routine right this second.

The Ordinary: PM or Nighttime Skincare Routine

Now that you know what to do with your morning skincare routine, it’s time to learn the basics of nighttime skincare routine with The Ordinary products.

Luckily, most of the steps overlap between the two, but they have some interesting differences that are also worth exploring.

Step #1: Double Cleansing

Double cleansing is a simple and effective way to secure your skin’s health and maintain a glowing complexion.

The first step in double cleansing is to start with a nourishing cleanser that simultaneously removes dirt, makeup, and excess oil. If you are normal to dry skin, then you should opt for a cleansing balm or oil as your first step. The lipophilic nature of these natural oils will break down and dissolve impurities, such as sunscreen and makeup, without stripping away moisture from the skin.

Gently massage the cleansing oil or balm in circular motions to cleanse the surface of your skin before rinsing with lukewarm water.

After removing the majority of dirt, makeup and excess oil with a gentle cleansing balm or oil, you can follow up with a creamy or foaming cleanser. This second step will help to deeply clean your pores and remove any residue left by the first cleanser.

Look for cleansers that are free from soap, sulfates, alcohols, fragrances and artificial dyes – these ingredients are often harsh on sensitive skin. Go easy on the cleanser and lather it onto your skin in a gentle, circular motion before thoroughly rinsing for beautiful skin that is both clean and moisturized!

Lukewarm water is best for effectively washing away your cleanser without causing irritation or stripping away too much of your skin’s natural oils. The water should be comfortably hot to the touch, not scalding hot. Depending on your cleanser, rinsing with cold water can help to provide an extra cooling and soothing effect.

Always finish off the double cleanse by splashing your face with cool water to help close the pores and reduce inflammation!

You can use The Ordinary brand’s Squalane Cleanser for this step. This will help dissolve any leftover makeup or skincare products and make them easy to remove from your skin.

After this, we recommend using a gel-based or foaming cleanser to wash and clear away the leftover balm cleanser on your skin along with any remaining impurities.

Step #2: Exfoliate

Exfoliation is the key to healthy, glowing skin. By removing dead skin cells, exfoliating can unclog your pores, reduce breakouts and reveal softer, more radiant-looking skin.

In this second PM skincare routine, we’ll go over what exfoliation is, how to exfoliate properly, and which products from The Ordinary brand are best for your skin type.

Exfoliation can offer a wide range of benefits, including removing dull and dead skin cells, boosting circulation and cell turnover, clearing clogged pores, balancing oil production, fading dark spots, minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and revealing brighter-looking skin.

Additionally, it helps to maximize the effectiveness of other skin care products by allowing them to penetrate more deeply.

It’s important to find the right aftercare products after exfoliating your skin. In most cases, using a mild, non-foaming cleanser and moisturizer suited to your skin type should do the trick!

If exfoliating leaves your skin feeling tight or dry, look for a product with humectants such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin. Make sure to apply SPF of at least 30 during the day.

Choosing the right exfoliating products for your skin type is key. If you’re looking for a gentle, chemical exfoliant that won’t irritate sensitive skin, look for AHAs or BHAs.

For those with normal-to-oily complexions or congested pores, enzymes and physical exfoliants may be more beneficial, as they provide deep yet gentle cleansing action.

And if you have dry or mature skin types, opt for gentle oil-based scrubs designed to remove dead cells while retaining natural oils.

While exfoliation is key for healthy skin, it needs to be done lightly. Unless specifically recommended by your dermatologist, once or twice a week is ideal for most skin types.

Note: Over-exfoliating can cause irritation, inflammation and other issues, so stick to a light touch and give your skin time to recover in between sessions. For best results, combine different exfoliation methods (like chemical and physical) but limit the frequency of each one.

Over-exfoliating can happen if you use the wrong product, don’t rinse correctly or apply too much pressure. It is important to avoid letting the exfoliant stay on your skin for too long.

Additionally, go easy with physical exfoliants, like scrubs and brushes, which should be moved in gentle, circular motions. If you experience redness or lasting dryness, it may be a good idea to reduce the frequency and intensity of your exfoliation routine.

Step #3: Tone

Similar to your AM skincare routine, you also need to tone your PM skincare routine.

This step helps your skin to have a balanced pH level while prepping it for the next products you’ll use and apply on your skin as part of your nighttime ritual.

Step #4: Nourish

As mentioned earlier, a few steps are the same as an AM skincare routine in the PM routine.

This step targets specific skin concerns that one might have. This is also where The Ordinary products excel.

The Ordinary produces a kit with heavy-hitting skin serums that one can choose from. Depending on what skin concerns you’re dealing with, it’s likely that you’ll find an ideal product that works wonders for your skin.

Note: Make sure to apply a few drops of your chosen essence, ampoule, or serum to your face. To get the most outstanding results, massage gently the product to your face and neck.

Step #5: Use a Sheet Mask

Technically, a sheet mask is also a nourishing treatment/product. However, it’s best to use this product around two to three times a week, and like exfoliating, you don’t have to do it every day.

Sheet masks soak your face with skin-friendly ingredients. Apart from that, if you put your sheet masks to Cool before using them, they may provide a relaxing sensation when you put them on your face.

Instructions: Always keep your mask on for around 10-15 minutes. Then accordingly remove it afterwards and pat the leftover product onto your face and neck.

Step #6: Use an Eye Cream

Good skin care starts with having a daily routine that includes the use of eye creams. Eye creams are packed with nourishing ingredients that help to reduce puffiness, dark circles and wrinkles around the eyes.

Before applying any eye cream, it is important to thoroughly clean the face. Make sure that you remove all of your make-up and wash off all oil and dirt that has built up on the face throughout the day.

Use a gentle cleanser for your skin type, apply it with circular motions and then rinse off with warm water followed by a splash of cold water to close your pores. Once you have prepped your skin, you are now ready to use your eye cream.

Start with a pea-sized amount of eye cream and apply it to your entire orbital bone, which includes the area under the eyes, on the sides, and above them. Make sure to avoid getting any product in your eyes or too close to the lash line.

Gently pat it into your skin using your ring fingers until all the product is absorbed. Focus on areas that are darker or have more wrinkles – these are typically around the lower eyelids and near the nose and outer corners of the eyes.

To help the eye cream absorb better into your skin and to prevent any puffiness, massage it using small circular motions. This will also help stimulate lymphatic drainage, promoting a healthy complexion and reducing puffiness. Additionally, massaging the product into the skin can help increase circulation so that the nutrients of the product are more readily absorbed.

Note

It is important to take care when applying an eye cream, as it can easily be spread from your finger into your eyes. To avoid this, apply the product with a gentle pea-sized amount on your fingertips.

Then, gently pat it around the orbital bone—the area of skin and cartilage that surrounds your eye—and not directly on the eyelid. This way, you won’t need to worry about any irritation or stinging upon contact with the eyes.

The skin around the eyes is especially susceptible to sun damage, which is why it’s important to layer an eye cream containing SPF over your skincare routine.

This extra step will not only protect you against eye wrinkles caused by UV exposure but will also reduce the risk of other conditions such as skin cancer. For best results, use generous amounts of sunscreen over the skin around your eyes and apply before heading outdoors.

Step #7: Moisturize

Moisturizing your skin is an essential part of any skincare routine as well as a last step. Proper hydration helps protect the skin from irritants and pollution, seal in beneficial ingredients, and make it look youthful and healthy.

If your skin is feeling dry, tight, and irritated, it may be time to give it some extra moisturizing love. Moisturizing is key for keeping your skin glowing and hydrated—and there’s an easy seven-step process for ensuring you get it just right.

Finding the right moisturizer for your skin type is essential to take proper care of your skin. Different skin types require different levels of hydration and nourishment, so selecting a product they’re specifically formulated for your unique needs is key. Pay attention to products that address oils, texture, blemishes, discoloration, wrinkles, or any other skin concern you may have!

Note

Before applying your moisturizer, it is important to ensure that your skin is free of bacteria and dirt, so start with a gentle cleanser that suits your skin type. Make sure to rinse off all residue before exfoliating with either a physical or chemical exfoliator. This will remove any dead skin cells and help the moisturizer better penetrate the skin.

Moisturizers are most effective when applied on damp skin. After cleansing and exfoliation, pat your face dry with a soft towel and immediately apply the moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp. This will lock in hydration, helping your skin to retain moisture and stay nourished all day long!

To get the best results from moisturizing your skin, utilizing a multi-layer approach is ideal. Start with a lightweight serum to deliver active ingredients directly into your skin cells, then layer on a light oil which can help seal in the moisture, followed by a heavier moisturizer for maximum hydration.

By using multiple layers of hydration, your skin will be protected from environmental elements and stay nourished throughout the day.

Your neck and face can often be delicate areas of your skin that are prone to developing wrinkles, so it’s important to give them extra attention when applying moisturizing products. To do this, warm a small amount of oil between your hands before pressing it gently into the skin on your neck and face.

Move your fingers in circular motions for a few minutes to stimulate circulation in these areas and help lock in moisture. Finish by applying a lightweight moisturizer all over your face, neck, ears and eyes.
