My Review of ‘It Ends with Us’
It literally took me six hours to devour this book. It took me six hours straight just to finish this book. And I can safely say those six hours changed my life forever.
My reading experience with this book was extremely fast-paced since I was on the edge of my seat throughout. Especially given the difficulty of dealing with domestic abuse and gaslighting, this book dealt with these topics very well.
The fact that Colleen Hoover dared to write this novel despite it being very personal to her and probably extremely emotional for her is something I greatly appreciate and admire. The fact that she did it not only makes me admire her, but I’m also glad she did it. In this novel, we learn how people who have experienced or are experiencing such trauma feel.
That kind of situation is very hard to escape, as the book captures it well. In addition, you should know how to spot one when you’re in one. It is Colleen Hoover’s skill to build up the story so that we feel all of the emotions Lily Bloom feels.
The author structures her story to make us fall in love with a particular character only for her to break our hearts right after. Just like Lily, we keep feeling the need to forgive Ryle for his actions because we love him so much. Even if it’s difficult, I’m glad Colleen decided to separate Ryle and Lily because it was the right thing to do. Both for us and for them.
There is a perfect balance of dark humor, romance, and comedy in this book. The experience broke me in the worst way, and yes, it hurt. Nevertheless, I learned a lot from it and am glad I read it. Structure-wise, the book is impeccable. The transition between past and present is smooth and the story moves along smoothly. I also enjoyed the dynamics between the characters.
As much as I loved Alyssa and Lily’s friendship, Marshall was also a great addition to their friend group. Also, I like how Colleen Hoover vaguely hints about random details we don’t think much about as readers, but then that specific detail links to a pivotal moment in the story.
Those are the kinds of stories Hoover tells so well. There is just something so captivating about her use of motifs. There’s something deliberate about everything in the novel. There is a reason for everything that is mentioned. A small tidbit on page 12 can reveal a huge surprise on page 220, and you wouldn’t have guessed it.
The frequent plot twists and turns and big revelations made the book so entertaining. As in most romances, the characters didn’t just exist to fall in love with each other. A lot of the plot was driven by characters, and none of them felt one-dimensional. A lot of attention was paid to the flaws and personality traits of each of the characters.
This book was ravingly acclaimed everywhere, and I can understand why. It just lives rent-free in my head, and I hope it always will. While I was unable to relate to Lily’s trauma whatsoever, I still found it to be an impactful read. It opened my eyes to how abuse SHOULD be depicted in books, movies, and other media.

There were so many characters I loved in this romance novel, Lily, Ryle, Atlas, Allysa, Marshall, and Lily’s mother. I was sad when the book ended because I wanted more.
